Choosing a kids' scooter: the complete guide for parents

Which scooter suits your child? It depends on age, experience and what your child wants to do with it. This is my advice after thousands of kids' scooters sold:

🚸 Step 1: Determine age and level

3-5 years: Tricycle scooters
Two front wheels give extra stability. Perfect for toddlers taking their first steps on a scooter. Low step, wide deck, easy handling.

4-7 years: Entry-level children's steps
Two-wheeled scooters with large wheels (120-145mm) for stability. Often foldable, ideal for going to school or the park. Note the maximum suur height - these scooters grow with you.

6-12 years: Advanced children's steps / Stuntsteps
Does your child want to learn tricks? Then a stunt scooter is the choice. Not collapsible but much sturdier. Smaller wheels (100-110mm) for better control in jumps.

📏 Step 2: The right handlebar height
- Handlebars should come between navel and chest
- Too low = bent back = back pain
- Too high = no control
- Measure your child's height and check the specifications!

⚖️ Step 3: Weight of the scooter
Kids' scooters should be light enough to lift themselves. A 5-year-old cannot lift a 5kg scooter at a curb. Choose:
- 3-5 years: max 2.5kg
- 5-8 years: max 3.5kg
- 8+ years: max 4kg (stuntsteps are often heavier but that's okay)

🛡️ Don't forget the protection!
Especially for stuntsteps: helmet + knee pads are essential. Falling is part of learning - but pain is not.

Frequently asked questions about scooters & stunt scooters

With a three-wheeler scooter, children can start as young as 3 years old. The two wheels at the front give extra stability. From 4-5 years, most children can get on a two-wheeler scooter. Stepping is easier to learn than rollerblading - most children get the hang of it within an hour!

A regular kids' scooter is collapsible, has big wheels and is meant to get from A to B. A stunt scooter is not collapsible, is much more solidly built and has smaller wheels - especially for tricks and skateparks. For beginners under 6: regular kids' scooter. Want your child to learn tricks? Stunt scooter!

The handlebars should reach between your child's navel and chest when standing on the scooter. Measure your child's height and check the handlebar height in the product specifications. In doubt? App me your child's height and I'll give personal advice!

When just stepping on the pavement, a helmet is not necessarily required, but recommended. When stunt stepping at the skate park, a helmet is REQUIRED - plus knee and elbow pads. Better safe than sorry, especially if your child is still learning.

Most children's scooters have adjustable handlebars that you can raise as your child grows. Always check the minimum and maximum handlebar height. Stuntsteps often have a fixed handlebar height - choose the right size for now.
