Choosing the right sleeping bag

A good night's sleep starts with the right sleeping bag. Here's what to look out for:

Temperature rating
- Comfort temperature: Up to this temp you sleep comfortably
- Limit temperature: Minimum temp for an average sleeper
- Extreme temperature: Survival limit (not pleasant!)

Always choose based on comfort temperature, not limit!

Filling
- Synthetic: Affordable, insulates even when wet, easy to wash
- Down: Lighter, compresses better, more expensive, not good with moisture

Form
- Mummy: Warmest, lightest, less room to move
- Rectangular: More space, heavier, can often be coupled
- Egg shape: Compromise between heat and space

Season
- 1-season: Summer only (15°C+)
- 2-season: Spring/summer (10°C+)
- 3-season: Spring/summer/autumn (0°C+)
- 4-season: Year-round including winter (-10°C+)

Frequently asked questions about sleeping bags

For summer camping in the Netherlands, a 2-season sleeping bag (comfort 10-15°C) is usually sufficient. Going in spring or autumn? Then choose a 3-season model. Dutch nights can also cool down in summer, so take something too warm rather than too cold!

The comfort temperature is where you sleep nice and warm. The limit temperature is the minimum at which you are just short of freezing, but comfortable is different. Always choose based on comfort temperature - after all, you want to wake up rested!

Synthetic sleeping bags can usually be machine washed at 30°C with mild detergent. Down sleeping bags need special down detergent. Don't wash too often - spot cleaning is often enough. Drying well is essential!

This varies by model and filling. Down sleeping bags compress best. Synthetic sleeping bags are larger but often more affordable. Check pack size in the product description if packsize is important to you.
